Tips For Happy Skin This Summer

Summer is here, and it's already a hot one🥵 I don't know about you, but even more than in the winter, I worry about my skin in the summer. The heat so easily brings breakouts and sensitivity. Here's what I suggest to help keep your skin healthy and glowy all summer long:

  1. Wash your face after sweating. It's important to get the sweat off your skin when you can. I know, you can't jump off your horse and immediately wash your face, but it's the first thing I try to do when I get home from the barn. It's important to clean off the sweat and dirt from your skin as soon as you can. If I'm at a show all day, I like to bring a little wash cloth and some face wash with me. Personally, I hate face wipes (they're so irritating to my skin and I feel like they just smear everything around), so I would rather find some water and give my face a little scrub with some good face wash. It also feels so nice after getting hot and sweaty.
  2. Use non-comedogenic products. Especially if I am going to be sweating, I want to be sure I am using products that are going to soothe my skin and not clog my pores. That's why I love using our CC Cream all summer long! It is hydrating and works to reduce redness and inflammation in the skin.
  3. Don't skimp on moisturizer. A lot of people think they only need to moisturize when their skin feels dry. Nope! Moisturize your skin all summer long too. I use a lighter weight moisturizer during the day and still use a heavier one at night for that over-night hydration. These are my current favorites and they are of course cruelty-free: Daytime Moisturizer, Nighttime Moisturizer
  4. Avoid touching your face. This is important, especially if your hands are dirty. You don't want to take the dirt on your hands and smear it around your face, so if you need to touch your face, wash your hands first.
  5. Wear sunscreen. Do I really need to go into this one? Please, wear sunscreen. Please. All day. Every day. Personally, I don't care what type or what number SPF sunscreen you wear. ANY sunscreen is better than no sunscreen.
  6. The best way to avoid sun damage is to avoid the sun. I know, I know, you can't stay inside all summer. Obviously. What I mean is be sure to wear protective clothing and a big hat or visor. I wear a lightweight but long sleeve shirt in the summer. It doesn't make me too hot and I avoid my arms burning. I also like to wear a large brim visor around the barn or shows. You may feel silly at first, but I can't tell you how many people have stopped me asking for the link to my visor. It's pretty and it shows you how little a baseball cap is really keeping you out of the sun. Sunscreen is great and all, but staying out of the sun is better. There are also options for visors that connect to your helmet, like in my picture below. No, the wide brim helmets do not cover you enough. Pick one that you feel comfortable in and rock it.
  7. Hydrate. Trust me, I hate this one too (I say as I take another sip of my iced coffee). But, think about it like you would for your horse...the best way to help your body is actually from the inside. I have been using electrolytes this year and I am seeing a huge difference in my hydration without needed to drink 6 jugs of water a day (or whatever amount is recommended now). I drink a bottle of water in the morning with my electrolytes and then continue to fill the bottle up throughout the day as I need it. Just look for electrolytes that are lower in sugar, so you can be sure you're really just getting the good stuff, and one that you like the taste so you'll actually drink it.

When it comes down to it, I want you to enjoy your summer. Whether you're riding, showing, spending time at the barn, or anything else you're doing, keeping these things in mind will help give your skin that healthy glow all summer long.
