Should Your Concealer Be A Lighter Shade?

I'm going to make this one quick and sweet! I get this question A LOT: Should your concealer match your skin or be a lighter shade?

Concealer should be self-explanatory in its name. It is used to conceal or hide, not stand out. Now, let me preface that I always strive for an easy, natural makeup look. I believe makeup helps you feel beautiful by enhancing your beauty, not by transforming your face. So, in my opinion, a concealer should match your skin tone and your base color so you don't even know it's there. It can be used in SO many ways like under your eyes to cover dark circles or to cover blemishes or discolored spots. It is highly pigmented, so it can cover even more than a full coverage foundation can. You want concealer to blend seamlessly, otherwise it will actually draw more attention to the spot you're trying to hide or enhance fine lines.

So, why do people say to buy a concealer in a shade lighter? Well, that's not really being used as a concealer. A lighter shade concealer is being used to brighten. So, you can use a matching concealer to cover, then, if you want to, you can go in with a lighter shade to brighten areas like the inner corner of your eye, the highest points of your cheek bones or the bridge of your nose.

Don't over complicate it! You can never go wrong with a matching concealer. I promise!

My tips to apply concealer: with concealer, you never want to glob on the product. Add some product to your skin, let it sit for about 5 seconds and then use a tapping motion to work the product into your skin. You don't want to rub the product. The tapping motion will help you get maximum coverage. Since you went in with a small amount of product, if you need more coverage you can always add a little more.

I hope this helps, but always know my inbox and DMs are open if you have any questions.

xoxo,

Chelsea
